Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Who can I contact to set an appointment to have my fingerprint scanned?
Northeastern Utah Educational Services (NUES)
35 S. Main Street
Heber City, Utah 84032
(435) 654-1921 ext 2
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring a valid drivers license or other picture ID. You need to have your Authorization or Request for Electronic Background Check Form provided by the agency that is asking you to have a background check. This form will specify the type of background check (FANC or NFUF) and will have an agency code, which begins with a B followed by four digits. The form will also have a place for personal information such as name, birthday, place of birth, SSN, etc. The authorized representative from the requesting agency must sign this form. We can’t legally fingerprint you without this form and signature. If you do not have a form like this, your requesting agency can’t be identified in the LiveScan system and we can’t help you. If you have a fingerprint ink card, you will need to go to your local police station or sheriff’s office to complete the ink card to send back to the requesting agency.
What is involved in the LiveScan Background Check Process?
We enter all the personal demographic information that you have filled out on the request form into the LifeScan Fingerprint system and then we take an electronic scan of your fingerprints. This information is then sent to the Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigation and they will process the background check. The results are then provided to your requesting agency.
How long does it take to get the results and who gets them?
In the NUES region we typically transmit the fingerprint information to BCI not less than once every week. If there are no issues, results will usually be cleared through BCI within 7 days after it has been sent. However, due to the budget cuts and BCI’s decreased hours, it could take longer. The results go directly to the requesting agency. If your agency has not received your results after two weeks, they will need to contact BCI to determine the holdup. NUES or the school districts are not involved in the process in any way after your records have been transmitted.
What does it cost for a background check?
A $25 charge will be assessed at the facility doing the background check. This fee pays for the taking of the fingerprints and for the maintenance, repair, and replacement of the LiveScan equipment.
Other costs may be charged for volunteers, classified employees, and subs depending on the school district’s policy. School Districts and other agencies incur a charge from BCI depending on the type of background check requested by that school district or agency. For questions regarding these costs, please contact the entity requesting fingerprinting.
I just had a background check for another agency, why do I have to do it again?
Yes you will need to have it done for each employer. There are two main reasons for being asked to do another background check. The first is there are legal issues regarding the sharing of background checks, especially if time has lapsed. Secondly, each LiveScan data record is tied to the specific agency requesting it when it was transmitted. Thus, there is no way to pull up the information, copy it, modify it or resend it. You must come in and complete a new LiveScan background check. And yes, you will have to pay another fee.
Is the fingerprinting different from the background check?
The fingerprinting is part of the background check process. The Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) will use your fingerprints and your demographic information to search through the criminal database and police warrants.
Do I need to call for an appointment to get a background check?
Yes. The schedule may vary and properly trained district personnel need to be available to do the fingerprinting. It is best to contact the NUES directly and confirm a time to have your background check completed. There is a calendar on the NUES website that gives information regarding the schedule. Please call for an appointment.
